If you get a chance to go to the mall lately, try to check out the proudly Philippine made products sold there. Many of these products are made locally in Cebu city or from a neighboring town. Most of the materials used to make these products are found in the Philippines. It is good to support these local entrepreneurs as they create nice pieces of Filipino arts and culture.

It is the start of Christmas shopping and you may want to buy these products to give as a gift this holiday season. You can also bring these products with you when you go abroad to give to your relatives and friends. But if they are living in California chances are these products are already sold in one of the many Filipino stores there. But a gift is always nice to receive gift if it is given heartily and bought from the Philippines.

This place I often visit is located 2 hours drive up north from Cebu city. If you take the SRP the travel time is even lesser.

On the way you can pass by Carcar town public market and eat lechon ( roast pork) with Puso (hanging rice) and softdrinks. The price of the lechon is relatively cheaper compared to the lechon in Cebu city and the taste is also richer with lots of condiments.

As I arrived at Simala Church in Sibonga Cebu, I was amazed with the structural improvements of the place. New walls, floors and even the roof are all new and shinny.

The last time I went to this place was last year and what a year it has been because the place looks great. Thanks to all the patrons and devotees of the church for all their donations.

If you get a chance to visit this place try to read the personal letters addressed to Mother Mary. It is a source of inspiration of the all the people who flock the church everyday from different places.

Check out also their gift shop where you can find all kind of items from pendants, rosary, prayer books , bibles and statues. All proceeds they say will go to the monks food and lodging.

The place is run by The Marian Monks of the Eucharistic Adoration.

The municipality of Loboc traces backs its historical root as the second oldest town in the Province of Bohol. Then name “LOBOC” came from the local dialect “ga loboc” meaning “pounding palay”. When Jesuit missionaries landed at the village, they chance into a family “pounding palay”. Thinking that he was being asked what he was doing, head of the family said “ga loboc” but then the friars was asking what’s the name of the place, thus the name Loboc.

Loboc was founded in the year 1602 by a Jesuit Father de Torres. The Jesuit missionaries built a church convent and a huge bell tower that still stands as an important historical feature of the town. Loboc has continually maintained peace and order even at the height of the Philippines revolution up to the establishment of the civil government. Sometimes in World War II, Loboc became the provincial capital as well as the headquarter of the Boholano guerella until it was transferred to Carmen.

The municipality has experienced some of the worst floods that occurred in the province. The first major flood occurred in 1876 leaving great loss to lives and property. The latest major flood was in 1964 that is almost the same losses incurred in 1876. Minor floods occur from time to time when the river overflows.

Way back during the period between 1956-1970, the town can recall the following salient events that happened. The hydro-electric plants started to operate giving electric power to the municipality as well as to its neighboring towns including Tagbilaran City. During the next fifteen years period, 1970 to 1985, Loboc witnessed the introduction of quality native baskets, nipa shingles, and other handicrafts, furniture making and reforestation projects. The town also witnessed the construction of “Krus Dako” as pilgrimage and tourist site, improvement of irrigation system, the construction of jumbo bridge that has remained unfinished up to now and which cannot be completed as it would precariously threaten the historical church edifice, It is just staying there idele and referred to by the people as a “monument of stupidity”. Politically, it was during the period that political rivalries heightened. In the last fifteen years, the following could be considered as positive development of the town. More barangay roads were opened, some of which provided access to other towns that shared common boundaries with Loboc. More mini buses plying the Tagbilaran – Loboc route and the popular “habal-habal” became available providing faster and easier means of transportation to commuters both within and outside the municipality. Improvements to some of its natural beauty spots made accessible through a “river cruise”. Construction of Barangay High School, construction of Joventino A. Digal Memorial Complex. In addition, commercial production of poultry and other livestock were also introduced providing needed income for the town. Culturally, Loboc found itself in the limelight when it was given national and international recognition and became Himig National Champion in a row for its “Loboc Children’s Choir”.

The Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta), known locally as the Mawmag in Cebuano/Visayan, is an endangered tarsier species endemic to the Philippines. It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly in the islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao.^[3] Its name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone.^[4]

Its geographic range also includes Maripipi Island, Siargao Island, Basilan Island and Dinagat Island.^[2] Tarsiers have also been reported in Sarangani, although they may be different subspecies. Being a member of a family that is about 45 million years old,^[5] it was only introduced to western biologists in the 18th century.^[6]

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines.^[1] It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres (20 sq mi). They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name.

The Chocolate Hills is a famous tourist attraction of Bohol. It is featured in the provincial flag and seal to symbolize the abundance of natural attraction in the province.^[2] It is in the Philippine Tourism Authority's list of tourist destinations in the Philippines;^[3] it has been declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument and proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.^[4]

Sinulog Celebration in Cebu

Sinulog is a religious celebration that happens only once year in Cebu city, in the Philippines.

People from all walks of life pay homage to the little child Jesus " Santo Nino", a little statue which was given by the Spanish colonial leaders as a gift to local leaders in Cebu, when they first discovered this tiny island in the Philippines.

It's been ages since I last joined the procession of the Sto. Nino with my family, my mother used to bring us to this event at least every year. It has become a little tradition for our family, but when she left for the United States of America in the mid 90's, we weren't able to do this tradition anymore.

Until recently my girlfriend planned for us to follow the procession of the Sto. Nino. I was excited because I can finally continue our family tradition with the Sto. Nino again after all these years.

We waited for the carriage of the Sto. Nino to pass by University of San Carlos, main campus in downtown, and then we followed it to Colon St. all the way back to it's home at the Basilica del Sto. Nino church in downtown, Cebu city.

There is more to the celebration of the Sinulog, it was really an experience that I will never forget. Viva Pit Senor!

Fine White Sand for Sale at Siquijor Island

Last year, I was in Siquijor Island in the Visayas part of the Philippines for a week of scuba diving with friends from Cebu City.

While I was walking to town from our resort at Dondeezco Resort, I was shocked with what I saw that day. Beach sand from the local beaches were sold as concrete hollow blocks (CHB). CHB is the primary material for building houses and hotels. Siquijor being an island it is located 30 mins away by boat from Dumaguete City. Which is very far and expensive for locals to buy CHB from.

But to use these precious white sand from the local beaches is not the solution to their problem. The Siquijor local government should provide quarry for these locals who wants to do business making CHB. If they continue to use fine white sand from the local beaches. In no time, there will be no more fine white sand beaches to swim on in the island.

Pls. if anyone from the local goverment from Siquijor or other neighboring towns can catch anyone using white sand from the beach, to pls. prohibit them from using these in the future.

10 years ago, I was an athlete for the Cebu city government that was sent to Japan to play for a series of goodwill basketball games. It's been a while since I step foot on the door steps of the Cebu city hall in downtown Cebu.

Aside from the time I went there to get my cedula and when I applied for building permit at the Office of the Building Officer or OBO, I haven't been to that place for quite sometime.

When I got there I was really amazed with the improvement of the physical structure of the place. The new interior of the building was also astonishing and the offices that used to occupy the ground floor were all relocated elsewhere.

I felt good after I walked out of that place, for I saw where my taxes went.

Who says that all politicians are corrupt. Maybe in some cities around the Philippines, but not in Cebu city the queen city of the south.

One year ago, I brought some of my Korean students to see Magellan's cross in Cebu city. When we got there and walked around for a couple of minutes and some more for some photo ops. They asked me what else can we see aside from the cross and the church that was near the place.

I asked myself that question also, so I told them let's go to Carbon market which is a few blocks walk away and buy some stuffs. We can get cheap clothes , fruits and dvd movies.

The new Magellan's cross in Cebu city deserves every inch of face lift made by our city government. Kudos to the people behind this project especially to our Mayor as it brings joy to my heart to see this place clean and with no more traffic passing this area, it has been transformed to a nice park for tourist and families to hangout.

Truly a place where we can bring our visitors and see more of the sights of Cebu city.

I was at Basilica del Santo Nino de Cebu yesterday and It's been more than a year since the last time I went to there in downtown Cebu city.

I was impressed with what I saw. The church was very clean and I saw lots of changes made by the administrators of the church.

They were able to change the pathways with new red brick stones. It looked very nice and it was perfect fit with the old church in the background.

They made a beautiful fountain inside the church, it replaced the old candle area, which they transferred outside where it is more accessible for people.

As we all know that Christianity in the Philippines started in Cebu city. Being a city rich with heritage, we should keep our culture and preserve it for the next generation.

If you are in Cebu city, in the Philippines don't forget to visit Basilica del Santo Nino de Cebu located at the heart of downtown in Cebu City.

This is one of the finest aerial shots I have for Metro Cebu. The timing was perfect for the plane to take this approach, the weather was right, the sun was like a flood light that is constantly illuminating the subject from this angle. This angle and this view was observable for just a few seconds.

Looking at Metro Cebu before traversing the mountains for Tanon Strait. The mountain in the foreground center is the antenna farm, to the left of it(almost out of the frame) is the area where "Tops" is. In the distance(near the top of the frame) is Olango Island, going down the frame is Mactan Island(where Mactan-Cebu International Airport is located). The small body of water is the Mactan Channel.

This is one of my favorite videos of the Whale sharks in Moalboal in Cebu City, Philippines.

You get a chance encounter every time you dive at any of the dive sites in Moalboal.

One time we were on our last dive and was about to go up, when we were surprised by a 15 to 20 feet Whale Shark. It was a chance encounter of a lifetime.

The Dive site Pescador Island is the best place to spot these gentle giants.

Framed for Murder? Filipino Paco Larrañaga Speaks from Jail

Francisco Juan "Paco" Larrañaga (born in 1977) is a dual-citizen of the Philippines and Spain convicted of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection on February 3, 2004 for the kidnapping and murder of Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong on July 16, 1997 in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. Paco left death row last year after the death penalty was abolished in the Philippines in June. He has since been moved to a new unit in the same prison of New Bilibid, southern Manila. The son of former Basque jai-alai player/pelotari Manuel Larrañaga and Margot González, Paco has better conditions now in his new cell than those he suffered on death row but is still awaiting justice for a crime that he denies committing.

More than 35 witnesses comprised of Paco's teachers and classmates at the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA) in Quezon City testified under oath that he was in Metro Manila, another city, when the crime is said to have taken place in Cebu. However, the trial court considered these testimonies as irrelevant. Many other witnesses classmates and companions at the R&R restaurant, were not allowed to testify.

Airline and airport personnel also came to court with their flight records, indicating that Paco did not take any flight on July 16, 1997, nor was he on board any chartered aircraft that landed in or departed from Cebu during the relevant dates.

Larrañaga's counsels Felicitas Aquino Arroyo and Sandra Marie Olaso Coronel urged the high court to admit the amicus curiae from the Basque Bar Council (BBC), Barcelona Bar Associations (BBA) and Bar Association of Madrid.

Former Ambassador Sedfrey Ordóñez claims he is the victim of a mistrial.

Fair Trials Abroad, an NGO working on behalf of EU citizens who face a miscarriage of justice, entered an Amicus brief which was submitted to the Supreme court by the European Commission's Manila delegate.

The inmates of CPDRC performed a surprise number in front of Capitol. This performance was a request by the inmates as their contribution to the 438th Founding anniversary Celebration. The Governor and Provincial Officials were so moved that they included all 1500+ inmates in the giving of the mid-year bonus for Capitol employees. Each inmate was given P1,000.00 pesos ($US 22.00)an incentive for good behavior. The inmates want to express their heartfelt gratitude to the people of the world. Pls. pass the good news!

I recently went to my old alma matter and I was in for a very big surprise. I graduated last March of 2000 from Cebu Doctors' College (CDC) known then, but just couple of years ago they were able to get their accreditation and is now known as Cebu Doctor's University (CDU). And they recently moved to a new location located at North Reclamation Area Mandaue in Cebu City, with a massive new building.

When I went there last week I was really impressed with what I saw, I went there to get my school records for my requirements. As I entered the huge structure I was happy to see familiar faces. The guards, janitors and the office workers were all the same from 6 years ago, so when I arrived I felt at home immediately.

I went to the registrar's office to get my documents as soon as I saw the massive structure inside i was wide eyed to see how beautiful the lobby and looking above the six floors was just an amazing experience for me. I envy the students now who are studying here in this super nice school.

I remember during my time we had no place to hangout during our break so we had to go to the parking area at the back under the shade of Manang's carenderia ( restaurant) to relax and review or sometimes grab a drink with other friends. This was because we didn't have a school canteen or a big lobby to hangout at.

While waiting for my documents to be process I was hungry so I decided to check out their new canteen which sits foot at the side of the building with over fifty different establishments renting and providing the students with quality food. As I checked the different food stalls I decided to eat some Steam Rice and Siomai at Lumpia House Restaurant which rented the biggest space in the new canteen. The price was the same as the Lumpia House located infront of the Cebu Doctors' Hospital. As I was enjoying my meal I saw the constructions of the indoor swimming pool located beside the canteen. It is targeted to be finish before August when the annual school 's intramural starts. I forgot to mention that theirs a Basketball gym located at the fifth floor with good seating and fiber glass backboard. I just wish I was still playing for Yayoy (basketball varsity coach for the CDC Stallions) because I would love to play basketball in that beautiful gym everyday.

I was about to leave CDU and I felt very proud to be part of this institution not only as a student but also as an alumni. I'm glad when I got my TOR (Transcript of Records) the letterhead on the paper says University not anymore College! Way to go Doctor L. Hope this blog can show other graduates from CDC the new CDU.

Today was the last day for the filling of applications to take the LET board examination this coming August 2007 here in Cebu city. But it was the hardest and most tiring week i ever had in my life.

First I had to secure my TOR or transcript of records from my old school CDU Cebu Doctors' University, and then I had to hand carry it to CSCST Cebu State College of Science and Technology my new school because the local post office wasn't able to deliver it to CSCST. That sucks I waited for a long time for nothing. Anyway, after i got my TOR from CSCST then i proceeded with my application.

Then my nightmares came to reality, the thing that i really hated the most are the long lines and very crowded government agencies with lots of fixers and the heat its like you are inside a sauna bath inside these offices because its very small and theres lots of people.

I had to ask someone to fall in line for me at NSO National Statistics Office at around 3 am to get my birth certificate. i had to give her some money for the hassle. Then after that when i arrived at PRC Philippine Regulatory Commission I was shocked to see all those people lining up just to get entertained by local government officials who are very busy and very annoyed by all of them.

It took me the whole week just to process my application and couple of bucks from my wallet because i had to pay my friend who was doing the long lines for me while I'm busy lining up in another line.

I hope our government can solve this problem soon because, its not just a problem for us Filipinos but also our visitors, I saw some foreigners lining up to get their marriage certificates at NSO. It was just embarrassing to see that we Filipinos accept this because it's already part of our way of life.
